These two boys were hanging outside Bagram Airfield as my colleague Doug Grindle and I arrived in a taxi from Camp Eggers in Kabul on our second day in Afghanistan. During the chaos of soldiers pushing people back as Doug and I tried to enter the base through a side gate I accidentally knocked the car gear from park into neutral with my luggage. The taxi rolled forward and not only dented the fender of the car in front of it but also bent the bike rim of the two curious boys who were hovering nearby. They wanted money from me for the damages and called me names that I don't think even American children know. Many months after returning from Afghanistan I noticed in the photo that the bike frame had been carefully protected by bubble wrap.
